SNAFU at Brokerage Firms Almost Cost Client

Client was retired and wanted to change his investment account from one brokerage house to another. The transfer was supposed to take less than 10 days, however, when the stocks in his protfolio began to decline in value two weeks after he directed the transfer of his account, he could not access it. The transferor broker claimed it no longer had access to the account, and the transferee broker claimed it did not have access to the account. Before the two brokerage houses finally got it right, the value of his investment had declined substantially, and neither broker would accept responsibility for the mistake.

Suit was filed against both brokers and prior to trial, the lost sums were repaid.
