Federal Assault Statutes

The provisions of federal criminal law on assaults are found in Title 18 USC 111 through 119, principally, and proscribe assaults against certain classes of persons such as federal officers or employees, foreign officials and diplomats, and some of them also address certain assaults occurring on the high seas or within the maritime jusrisdcition of the United States. This list is not at all exclusive, because there are other statutes in the federal criminal code that are more specific as to crime and victim.

For example, 18 USC 111 imposes a sentence of from 1 to 8 years for forcibly assaulting, resisting, impeding, intimidating or interfering with certain federal officers engaged in the performance of their duties, or in retaliation for some official act done before. If a deadly or dangerous weapon is used, or serious bodily injury results, the maximum term of imprisonment is 20 years.

Foreign guests, officials and diplomats are also protected under this chapter of Title 18. Depending on the nature of the assault, the means used, and the status of the person assaulted, a maximum prison term of 10 years may be imposed.

Assaults or maimings occurring within the maritime or territorial jurisdiction of the United States vary and the punishments range from imprisonment terms of 1 to 20 years. The punishment will depend on the nature and severity of the assault.
