Virginia's "Implied Consent" Statute Compels One Charged With DUI to Give Evidence Against Himself or Lose His License
Virginia State Police won't be enjoying much of the Memorial Day weekend with their families. The long weekend will be no long holiday for them, or for many of their law-enforcement brethren in Richmond, Hanover County, Henrico County, Chesterfield County and Goochland County.
They'll be participating in Operation CARE, short for Combined Accident Reduction Effort. State troopers will be mainly targeting the I-95, I-295 and I-64 corridors. The program is intended to reduce the number of crashes, road fatals and injuries. The troopers will be out in greater numbers, many on motorcycles.
They will be joined in the effort by local police departments, who will set up sobriety checkspoints on or near highways that have previously yeilded high rates for DUI arrests. The CARE operation will continue through midnight Monday.
The CARE program on last year's Memorial Day weekend resulted in ticketing 11,724 speeders, 2,579 reckless drivers, and arrests of 169 suspected drunken drivers, statewide.
